Free Minds Book Club

About

Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop is a DC non-profit organization that uses books, creative writing, and peer support to awaken DC youth incarcerated as adults to their own potential.  Through creative expression, job readiness training, and violence prevention outreach, these young poets achieve their education and career goals, and become powerful voices for change in the community.

GW students provided critical support to our incarcerated teen and adult members by contributing more than 1,400 hours

  • Reading and responding with words and art to member poems
  • Reading and writing letters to members incarcerated in federal prisons all across the country (most in solitary confinement since Covid 19 epidemic)
  • Attending Free events with Free Minds Poet Ambassadors who share poetry and their lived experiences
  • Discussing a wide range of topics with Poet Ambassadors and Free Minds staff
and so much more!
