Howard University

During the Howard Univ. Alternative Spring Break program, I was able to volunteer in Memphis, TN with a K-8 afterschool program. During this program, we engaged in physical exercise activities with the students such as basketball. This relates to our Bio 102 lecture on the importance of exercise and how staying active can affect our bodies. Through physical activities such as basketball, our bodies are able to improve their motor coordination, flexibility, and muscular endurance. They also help improve and strengthen our cardiovascular system which helps increase our blood circulation in our bodies. This increase in blood flow keeps many of our organs healthy and improves upon our immune systems. Without exercise in our normal routines, we could face many health problems in the future such as obesity, high blood pressure, and type-2 diabetes. Knowing this allows us to understand the importance of allowing our youth to keep their bodies active and in good shape. Overall, staying active can help keep our bodies healthy, prevent diseases and illnesses, and keep us energized, which are all crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Sign up: Martha's Table Volunteer Calendar

Through Martha's Table, I was given the opportunity to help combat food insecurity within the local D.C. community. In the morning and afternoon, I contributed by helping hand out produce items such as fruits and vegetables at the market. In the evening, I was also able to help out on the van and deliver hot food items, sandwiches, water and winter clothing to people across the D.C. area.
