    GW Community Response to COVID-19

    I cleaned up my communal backyard yesterday afternoon. This included cleaning fallout from maple trees, fallen tree branches that fell off due to a storm we had earlier, and plucking weeds growing on the historical staircase. In total, I collected two bags full of garbage, one for the staircase and one for the sidewalk that was full of garbage.

    My student and I read and answered questions about Cherokees and their brutal displacement. We read sentence by sentence and used context clues to come up with responses. I was very flattered by her parents asking me to continue tutoring until the end of the school semester in NY and decided to help her out until the end of June.

    My student and I covered Andrew Jackson, his biography, and his involvement with disbanding the National Bank. Arina read out loud the passages and I corrected her English pronunciation. After, we responded to the questions using context clues.

    Seventh-grader Arina and I watched a YouTube video on Lewis and Clark and answered homework questions together. It was an easier tutoring session because the video had a lot of images and for a non-English speaker it was significantly easier to visualize what was happening in US history.

    Seventh-grader Arina and I discussed the famous Manifest Destiny painting where I tried to explain to her what the concept meant through identifying basic parts of the image such as lady America, mountains, wagons, and so on. It was a challenge to explain the symbolism, especially only using simple English.

    I helped a seventh-grader who only speaks Russian and Ukrainian go over her checks and balances powerpoint and answer questions that followed. She read the PowerPoint out loud and I corrected her pronunciation, explained the concepts using easier words and cognates, and translated some challenging words into Russian.

    I did another hour of tutoring of a seventh-grader Arina Polivoda for US History. We covered Checks and Balances video and completed her homework from 3:15 to 4:15pm. She had a hard time understanding what jury is because she is from Ukraine and our court system is different than in the US.

    I tutored a 7th grader Arina Polivoda US History today from 1:30 pm to 2:30 (1 full hour). We have covered the first 10 amendments in both English and Russian as she does not speak English well (her family moved to the US less than three months ago). It was challenging because I never tutored older classes, especially with a significant language barrier.
