    GW Community Response to COVID-19

I'm taking the GW course- BISC 1008: Understanding Organisms Through Service Learning, taught by Professor Tara Scully

As part of this course, our class has been engaging in a variety of alternate community service activities, as we adjust to the COVID-19 crisis. Community service is required as part of our grade in the course.

This submission is completing for the "Smithsonian Digital Volunteer" task. The description was to, "sign up to help with biodiversity and historical document transcription."

I helped transcribe documents from the "Women's History" section of the Smithsonian online library.

I completed more hours of this volunteering effort because I found it super interesting, despite having achieved the minimum. It's intriguing to get little glimpses into people's lives as your transcribe and try to make sense of their writing.

I helped transcribe documents from the "Women's History" and "Biodiverse Planet" sections of the Smithsonian online library, including work from astronaut Sally Ride which was very cool.

This opportunity was something I didn't know was offered before the virus outbreak, and I found super interesting. It's at least a small reminder that some tiny good things can come out of this terrible event we're currently experiencing.

This submission is completing for the "Others in need" task. The description was the following, "There are many people who should not and can't go out, either because of a physical situation, age, or an underlying health issue, they need help...carry out an errand such as going to get food, supplies, medication, etc. for someone in this situation..."

I picked up food from our local supermarket and delivered it to my adorable grandparents (while keeping a safe distance).

It's certainly interesting how common tasks have become stressful/potentially dangerous during this unorthodox time.

This submission is completing the "Food Donations Task" in which we were, "put together a package of food/make a meal for an organization/person or donate time to an organization that is doing this type of work [aiding in the response to coronavirus.]"

Glad to make a positive impact, and be more a part of the solution than the problem, in these crazy times.

This submission is completing the "Stay Active" activity, which is described as follows: "Staying fit: Share pictures of your daily exercise routine – this is not just limited to actual work outs like yoga, lifting weights, but also if you are doing chores to stay active. "

Our class is working together to engage in many tasks despite the coronavirus, and I'm glad to be a part of a positive impact, even if its immensely diminutive given the scale of everything.

The submission of these hours is delayed because I couldn't figure out if and then how to do it in this system.

    Martha's Table

I helped sort clothing various items, clean the facility, and interacted with guests.

I always enjoy interacting with the other Martha's Table staff at this location, they're all exceptionally cool and friendly people. It was nice to work with the Outfitters team again after being at the Market for the last couple weeks.

I was glad I was able to help sort clothes and contribute to the group. Always a good experience!

    Martha's Table

Worked with local community members in helping them to select food items, and helped bag and clean the facility.

I helped a woman today who must have been 70 or 80, gently picking her food, and helping her pack it up so she could bring it home. That was really nice (the nice woman at the front desk called a taxi for her).

    Martha's Table

Helped local DC residents navigate through the market, while bagging their selections and guiding them through the rules.

Also helped clean the facility, and learned a bit more about the programs Martha's Table offers in helping the community.

I can't stress enough how welcoming everyone in this organization has been, which has been truly wonderful!
