It was a great experience packing over 700 bags of food for distribution.
Was a good clean-up session. Same as last week, with additional work sorting through donations.
Today was a cleanup shift. It was great working with the team; cleaning and packing up the van for MaKenna's Wagon.
Another weekend of Senior Saturday; driving to and distributing meals at a low-income senior center.
This week I volunteered for the senior Saturday and helped deliver food to a low income senior living home. It was eye opening to go into the home and speak with the recipients of Martha's Table. It was amazing speaking with some of the individuals and seeing how happy they were. This is an important shift as many of them do not have the means to be able to leave their homes for food.
This week I volunteered at Martha's Table's Senior Saturday. I helped organize the kitchen and then prepared meal bags, loaded the vans and drove off to a low-income senior home. The group and I knocked on the doors of the recipients and handed them food. It was great to speak with those receiving the food, and being able to see how much easier this made their weekends.
I decided to switch it up again and I volunteered for Martha's Table's Senior Saturday. I showed up early and helped organize before the rest of the volunteers showed. Once they did, we packed up meals for a low-income senior home, drove to the facility and knocked on doors. As I passed the food out I began speaking with recipients who greatly appreciated Martha's Table for making their weekends easier. Many of the recipients are unable to leave the building for long periods of time, let alone go and get their own food. We left feeling great satisfaction, and I look forward to going back soon.
Today I changed it up and worked in the food market, meeting people and helping them shop for free foods. I also worked with a number of other volunteers to stock and maintain the overall workings of the store. It was very cool to see the other side of Martha's Table and meet those who are benefiting from the mission of the organization.
The experience was a great one. We started the day prepping food for dinner time distribution at two locations in DC. After distribution we then cleaned the kitchen. Post cleaning we drove around the city and distributed dinners. It was eye opening communicating with the clients and having brief conversations with those who wanted to. I am excited to continue this service project and see what else I learn from working and engaging with the community.
