This time, I spent most of my time tossing chicken in sauce, cleaning kale, and organizing. There were some new volunteers who I got to show around the nutrition lab, and the sense of familiarity I'm getting is nice to reflect on.
I've been getting to know the people I'm working with, which makes everything more enjoyable and rewarding. This session consisted mostly of organizing prepackages goods, bagging fresh beans and kale for delivery, and cleaning the counters/floor.
I worked at the nutrition lab rather than the main location, which was smaller and a bit more lax. Everyone knows each other very well and I'm glad to be a part of a team. The things to get done by 4 are clearly set out, and everyone powers through the day to get there. In this instance I spent most of the time sorting condiments that were getting shipped out to specific locations and sweeping.
This was my only time at this particular location, but I enjoyed the teamwork of everyone in the kitchen. Volunteers helped wherever it was needed, whether it was organizing the back room or chopping up a salad. It was fast paced, but a lot got done in a short amount of time.
After learning about some of the issues with pollution and the Potomac, we walked down a back path right along the river to collect washed up trash or litter from walkers. It felt good to get involved outdoors while it was warm, and we collected an impressive amount of trash.
