    Miriam's Kitchen

Served drinks and interacted with guests, stayed a little later than usual to clean up and store food. Chef Marcus said we served 171 guests today, which is a high turnout for the beginning of the month! I'm glad to have helped make it possible!

Today I helped serve drinks to guests. We served apple juice which was a special treat and it was very popular. We went through at least 20 bottles of apple juice and milk!

Today I peeled and quartered 2 giant bins of apples. I also got to know some of the sous chefs today and got to understand Miriam's Kitchen better.

Today I cut bread and quartered pears/plums. It's my 21st birthday and was glad I came in to help as I learned how to properly use big knives--a necessary skill for being an adult in the kitchen!

Today I helped sort, pick, and wash grapes. I also helped serve dinner (sandwiches, veggie stir fry, fries, eggplant salad, grapes + cake) and cleaned up.

Today I cut peppers and helped serve dinner at Miriam's. The meal of the day was chicken and potato dumplings, collard greens, salad, and dessert. The chef encouraged us to taste-test the meal before serving to show that the meals that Miriam's provides is healthy and tasty!

Today was my first day of service at Miriam's. I helped with dinner prep by cutting onions and setting up the tables. For the majority of my shift, I helped pour drinks for guests. This role gave me the most interaction with guests in seeing their needs and understanding what they were going through. It was a gratifying experience.

I attended the Volunteer Orientation for Miriam's Kitchen. We learned about the program's history, the services it offers, and procedures/guidelines for volunteering. We heard from 2 speakers--1 was a former guest of Miriam's while the other was an ongoing guest who was grateful for the services Miriam's has provided him. Hearing from these two perspectives was a great way to start my service as it motivated me to serve towards a greater purpose.
