This was a food market shift at E.W. Stokes Public Charter school. For this shift, we were running low on volunteers so there was more work to be done which I enjoyed helping out with. We first moved tables around and created the set up for the food market, then we unloaded groceries from the freezer in the schools kitchen. After unpacking the van that had the remaining supplies I set out the food items and began to prepare bags for when the kids and parents came in to shop. During the event, I was floating through the three station (the pantry goods, vegetables, and fruits) helping parents or children that came by. Afterwards, I flattened boxes, packed up the supplies, cleaned some pans that were dirty from the cooking section, and helped make over 40 bags of food for children who were unable to come and for faculty.

Originally this was supposed to be a Baking Enthusiast shift, however it was cancelled that day. Instead, we used this shift to do a "deep clean" of the kitchen, food packing area, and pantry. To start off, I scrubbed all of the tables including both the table tops, sides, and underneath in the main food packing area and then in the kitchen. Next, I collected carts that are typically used to hold and transport food and took them outside in the alley and cleaned them. Afterwards me and three other volunteers went to the pantry and reorganized everything on the shelves. It was our job to go through all of the items to see what needed to be restocked and then organized those supplies for easy access.

I went to another Joyful Food Market for this shift at Cornerstone of Washington which is a private school in SE, D.C. This food market was a little different from the other one I attended- instead of creating an open market where kids and parents can come and choose what they want to take home we prepackaged bags with food supplies. These bags contained milk, beans, rice, apples, bananas, lemons, onions, green bell peppers, potatoes, and cabbage. We had the bags packed and ready to be handed out on tables. I was in charge of organizing the food supplies into three categories (pantry, fruit, and vegetables) and set them out on the tables. Before, I helped with unloading the van and moved tables around and placed table cloths on them. During the food market there were slow periods where I threw away the boxes leftover and packed the van back up. Overall it was a great experience and I already have signed up for three more food market events after this semester ends.

I signed up for the Food Tidy Up Shift for November 19th from 2:30-4:30 pm. I started off by collecting all the dishes that were used for an event earlier on in the day and cleaned them at the sink station. I rinsed, scrubbed, and dried all the dishes and utensils and then afterwards put them away. Afterwards, I collected the food containers and packaged hot food from the oven into them to be delivered. After loading the trucks with them I brought in sandwich containers from the refrigerator outside and packed two boxes full of them to be stored and delivered later on this week. This is one of my favorite events because there's constantly something to be doing.

This was the Joyful Food Market event that took place at JC Nalle elementary school in SE, D.C. The purpose of this event is to provide a "pop-up shop" with healthy foods for low-income areas. Usually the food market takes place at elementary schools where students can come and shop for their families or parents can shop when picking up their children after school. During this event, I prepped and organized each food station with items such as fruits, vegetables, canned goods, and dry foods. I was in charge of the vegetable section where I would package bags of vegetables such as onions, greens, garlic, yams, etc. Afterwards, I cleaned up, swept, moved tables, and packed up the truck with whatever foods was left over.

This was the Food Tidy-Up shift at Martha's Table in NW, D.C. During the shift, I packed and loaded containers of food into trucks to be distributed for a food market. After loading the trucks, I packed bags of granola into containers and then cleaned the tables where food is prepared and the kitchen.

I participated in the Joyful Food Bag Prep event at Martha's table headquarters in SE, D.C. I prepped bags with various vegetables and food for an elementary school located in Ward 7. Bell peppers, potatoes, bananas, apples, spaghetti, and canned chicken were all included in these bags. The purpose of preparing and packing these bags is to provide food to areas where there are food deserts and food disparities. It also allows children who might have not been exposed to healthier food alternatives to have the chance to have that opportunity.
