During this dinner shift at Miriam’s kitchen, I was on drink duty with my group partner Vivika. We poured sweet tea and milk for the guests. This was a really cool position because I got to interact with the guests the entire shift. So many of them were greatful for our volunteering . I really felt like I was doing something to change the community I live in, even if it was just handing a person a glass of milk.

I went alone for my first dinner shift. I was a little nervous as it was my first time going. For the first half hour, I peeled and cut up squash for a dinner for the next week. They then had us serve the guests their dinner. I was on salad duty. It was a bit messy. I was surprised by the diversity of people who came. Homelessness does not discriminate is all I can say. The last hour was spent cleaning up the kitchen and the dining room. By the end, I was exhausted.

I went with my group to Miriums’s Kitchen for orientation. Although we only learned what we were going to be doing in a lecture types setting, I could tell that our work in the future was going to be meaningful. They had a former guest come in to speak about how Mirium’s kitchen got him off the street and inspired him to open up his own moving company. I was really moved and can’t wait to start helping.
