Volunteer Opportunities at DC Central Kitchen

I did my community service with the community organization DC Central Kitchen for 3 hours on a Sunday morning. The community service I preformed involved food preparation using the food donated to the DC Central Kitchen that they then use to help provide community members with more accessible healthy food options. Specifically, for the majority of the time I was preparing fruit by cutting it and individually packaging it. The purpose of the service and was to assist in preparing the food donations so they were individual servings and ready to use for the community. The service that they provide is so important to the community because it provides low and no cost opitions for people in the community to have healthy food options. This course material relates to this community service because this course is centered around how food brings communities together. The work of DC Central Kitchen brings members of the community together in more ways than one. They bring together businesses and other members of the community together through the donation of food to DCCK, they bring together people all over the DC area through direct service with the food preparation and they help to better serve disadvantaged populations in the DC community by providing healthier and more accessible food options for all. I really enjoyed my experience with DCCK and think the work they do is so important to the community. Being a public health major and nutrition minor, this organization really panders to the causes I am passionate about.

Very meaningful event for our organization. We were able to serve with the "Bathroom Club" of an all-girls elementary school in Ward 8.
