We cleaned up the Store by helping check the expiration date, cleaning the shelves, organizing the fridge and taking out the trash. It was nice to work with new people and do service that I have never done before.
It was cool seeing other people's projects
Today was their last day but instead of soccer, they had a tutoring session. I read with Miley and helped her on her reading assignment. After we played a small game of hangman which was fun to see the kid's creativity. They definitely have opened up throughout the season so it was nice to have some fun with them in a relaxed session. I definitely have enjoyed my time at DC Scores and it has opened up my mind on the ways that service can impact not only the community you are in but yourself.
Today was their poetry Slam. The number of schools that attended surprised me! The poetry definitely exceeded my expectations in the best way possible! Walker Jones did awesomely and remembered all their lines! I helped set up at the beginning and then sat with Walker Jones. All the teachers were so supportive of each other. All the set up that happened before was very organized which helped make the show run smoothly. It was a good way to end the season and my time at DC Scores for the semester.
Today I got to observe their poetry day! Their poems are so good and they definitely have rehearsed it many times. There was definitely a shift in attitudes when the kids were rehearsing the poems. Some of the more confident soccer players or louder kids were quieter during the poetry rehearsal. Mr. Smith was really good with the kids boosting their confidence and giving them good feedback.
This was Walker Jone's last game. Although they lost, they definitely did a lot better and almost scored! There were not enough boys to play a whole game so they did coed games. Coach Smith was definitely enthusiastic about today's game which definitely gave the kids a lot of energy. They ar enow focusing on their slam poetry party.
Today was a good day with DC Scores. Although they lost the game, they did have a lot of good oppurtunities to score. Also, it was nice because today I felt as if I had gained some of the kid's trust and they were able to interact with me feeling comfortable. All of the "scholards" in DC Scores have a big heart and personality so its nice to see it come out. Although I am not directly coaching them, I enjoy watching Coach Jim and Mr. Smith lead in different styles.
Tuesday's are their practice days. While it is somewhat free-flowing, when the kids do actively particpate its interesting to see how they interact with one another. For warm-up they choose one player to lead the warmup and run. Instead of having Coach Jim or Mr. Smith do it, they allow one to take charge. Even at a young age, leadership skills can devleop and grow. I was able to articipate in some of their drills which was nice.
This was the first official practice that I attended. We set up 2 drills for the kids, one was shooting and the other was passing. There were some conflicts that took up some of the time but it was definitely helpful in terms of building skills. Three bracelets were handed out for leadership skills the past week which I think just strengthens DC cores Goals. I really enjoyed today and seeing the kids interact with each other and the coaches.
I really enjoyed my experience with Lucky Dog. If I had to asses what type of service this would be it would definitely be advocacy. I have not done this type of service before but it was interesting to see how the leaders of this organization had to find.a way to stop people who were walking on the street going about their day to tell them about their organization. I think the dogs did help some but a lot of people stopped and asked questions. The dogs were so cute and I will definitely volunteer with them again!!
