At Martha's Table, I learned about their core values of Education, Food, and Opportunity specifically in the clothing store they have. People are able to create a membership where they can buy affordable clothes for work or job interviews. They can also buy clothes for children along with diapers, bottles, and wipes. Today I sorted children's clothing and placed them around the store. I also helped unload and unpack the deliveries made today and then sorted the contents in a way that was most efficient for the directors.
My teammates and I raised money through collections outside of whole foods and the metro to donate to churches and less fortunate families. We made trips to food pantry’s around campus to deliver dontated items. We also put together baskets filled with goods for families who can’t afford to have all the necessities over the holidays. Lastly we went and delivered the baskets to chosen families through St. Rita’s church and it was amazing to see how many families we impacted.
We taught children how to play lacrosse while being educational yet fun. It was amazing seeing all the young girls have so much fun while they were improving their skills.
Today we taught younger kids how to improve their lacrosse skills and their lacrosse IQ. By being outgoing and relatable I was able to get across to the younger kids and their parents on how to be a better athlete and also how my time at GW has been as a student athlete.
Along with many other freshman athletes, today my peers and I cleaned up trash in a park and surrounding the Anacostia river. We toughed out the weather, picking up trash in the pouring rain, and were able to make a visible difference in the land around us. I was able to meet new people and learn about the surrounding area and the importance of keeping these places clean.
