Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service & Leadership 2022

It was very exciting to learn about GW Votes and their platform for helping get more youth registered to vote. It was made very easy to understand and the importance of voting/registering especially young people was a common through line. Very excited to get more involved.

First time back since returning to school. It was rather somber given the events that happened last Tuesday, but I was grateful to be able to carry out the service and see everyone there.

I was quite upset that my schedule last semester made it so difficult to go to MK's. This was the last time I could fit in before returning home before winter break, but I am glad that this semester I will be able to go regularly again.

It was the last day for a couple case managers and staff-members which was sad. But had the opportunity to say goodbye and thank them for creating such a meaningful experiencing and providing so much heart and passion in their work with Miriam's.

Another day where I was the only volunteer, but as always, we made it all work. Unfortunately, as students head into finals and then head home, this will become too regular for the dining room, which is very saddening. I remember being here last summer and I was incredibly grateful to be able to go regularly, but oftentimes, I was the only volunteer for the week. Goes to show that EngageDC and the GW community more generally (Greek organizations, service-learning classes) are a huge provider of volunteers and that EngageDC is really able to implement a sense of sustainable service for the cohort which is essential. I will not be here this summer so I, unfortunately, won't be able to go back until I return to DC, a thought that makes me quite sad. It also makes me think about entering and exiting communities respectfully, but also how we get to enter and exit communities and circumstances. This has been consistent throughout my service and is a theme for service more generally, but it is made particularly stark in my leaving D.C. to go home for the summer. I have the privilege and capability and support to both enter and exit this community at will. This should never mean that I then do not serve out of a feeling of sadness and guilt, but that my service must be all the more mindful of such privilege and the potential detriment that has on the people who cannot simply escape such circumstances. Something to further reflect upon. Of course, the solution is to alleviate such circumstances, such poverty, such oppression, altogether and create a society where no one must experience homelessness, especially for prolonged periods of time and especially because of a substance-use disorder, mental or physical illness, domestic violence and/or all the other unjust factors, such as market-failures, job losses, and structural racism that compound to cause and create homelessness.

Was the only volunteer today but we made things work and we were able to do the clothing program while also managing the toiletry cart. Most importantly, case managers were able to meet with guests and their clients.

Hectic but very good day, as always. Given the number of volunteers, I was able to work the front desk area, handing out tokens, stamps, taking appointments, etc. while the case managers met with clients. This job is particularly informative and allows me to engage a lot with guests.
