Event DescriptionThe largest wooded area in Ward 8 at 197 acres, Shepherd Parkway is a long, narrow greenway covering the steep hillsides that separate the neighborhoods of Congress Heights and Bellevue from I-295 and Joint Base Anacostia Bolling. Shepherd Parkway’s rugged topography and hardwood forests hide the remains of two Civil fortifications, a bald eagle’s nest, numerous stream beds and a small wetland. Biologists have identified rare plant and aquatic microorganisms within the park, parts of which have been largely undisturbed since the Civil War.

Unfortunately this precious resources has been severely neglected by the National Park Service. Community Clean-Ups have been held at Shepherd Parkway every second Saturday of the month since 2012. So far we've removed more 25 tons of trash and cut invasive vines off of hundred of trees, but there is much still to do.

This is the ideal volunteer opportunity for anyone who loves in be in nature, exercise and immediately see the impact of their work.
