Civic Changemakers is a free summer program for middle school students at Sousa Middle School. The program runs from July 5th to August 3rd from 9 am to 2 pm. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided daily. This program is available to students not participating in summer enrichment. Summer enrichment and Civic Changemakers will happen at the same time, and students will not be able to attend both. 

Over the summer, students will learn ways to become changemakers and community problem-solvers. With help of college students from GW and around the country, students will complete a project that impacts their community. Using the DO IT model, students will Decide on an issue or challenge facing their community, Organize and plan a way to address the issue, Implement their project, and Tell their friends, family, and community members about things they accomplished.  

In the process of completing their projects, students will have the opportunity to hear from local leaders. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to participate in field trips to the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, the Capital, the monuments, a Smithsonian Museum, and the Planet Word Museum. These field trips are designed to increase their civic awareness. When attending field trips transportation from the school will be provided.  

By signing up for this program, your child is expected to attend all five weeks of the program. On August 3rd, there will be a presentation where each group will share information about their completed project, and we would love for parents, guardians, and other family members to attend!
