BADM 1002 13 First Year Development

The presentation that impacted me the most was by a group of SMPA sophomores who had a mission of working with the World Wildlife Foundation to raise more awareness for the WWF amongst a younger demographic. The group noticed that one area where the WWF was lacking was in their merchandise, which appeared as if it had not been updated since the 90s. The group used research about social media trends to create new merchandise ideas for the WWF. Instead of designing new apparel, the group rather provided recommendations based on best-selling styles from retailers that are popular with the age group that the WWF was trying to attract: Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, and H&M, to name a few. Their project really impacted me because, as a business student, this is an extremely realistic project that I may have to tackle in the future. It reminded me vaguely of the case-study style interview activity we did in class. I was impressed by their work, and I personally think that if they were to actually implement their idea, it would be quite successful.

I attended the session about social change as good business. Two panelists discussed the importance of social change in the workplace, and also touched upon civility, which was a big theme in FYDP last semester. Something that the panelists said that resonated with me was to let yourself be distracted because, by doing so, you can discover new passions that may lead into new careers. This was big for me because I am currently struggling to find out which passion of mine I want to make into my career, so letting myself get distracted may be a way to find a new passion that I feel most strongly about.
Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why?
- The showcase that discussed about documentary reporting on unpopular issues was the most impactful to me because it exposed a variety of issues within our societies that are not televised or shown in any online news outlets. This opened up new perspectives to me on the media.

Q1) Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why?
Q2) Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new you learned about community engaged scholarship?

A1) The showcase presentation which was most impactful to me was the one by Destiny which focussed on Martha's Table. I think this presentation was most impactful because she was one of the only presenters in room 310 who actively took interest in presenting. Most other presenters only had one page and didn't show much interest in explaining. Destiny had a full powerpoint presentation with more than 6 slides, she had statistics related to the professional clothing problem in DC as well as actively engaged with her audience. I was able to learn about how 43% of the population in the DMV area are unable to afford professional clothing and Martha's Table works to bridge this gap and provide equal opportunities to all. I also learned the specific activities she engaged in while on service such as organizing clothes, hanging them up and sorting clothes.

A2) I attended the session which was called Beyond the Service- Social Change as Good Business. The session discussed the issue of food wastage and the speakers provided statistics related to that. The most eye catching data included that 40% of the total food in America gets wasted. In developing countries such as mine ( India), food shortage and poverty is very prevalent in most parts of the country. Understanding that 40% of the food is wasted in America, made me think of the amount of people it could fill in India. Another thing I learned about community was that if you have an idea and wish to implement it do not let anything come in your way. Strive to achieve what you have set out for. It is okay to fail a few times, but keep pursuing what you are interested in.
Question #1 Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why? (Be sure to upload a picture)
- I went to the showcase presentation with the videos about Ashley Lee the SA president, the Catholic Church scandal and a trans-womans struggles. I think out of these the video about the trans-woman's struggles was the most impactful because she discussed her life being a sex worker and being trans and the disadvantages and problems she faced. It really impacted me because it made me think about how some people may not have it as easy as I do. So I donated to her go fund me to help her pay her first months rent.
Question #2 Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new your learned about community engaged scholarship?
- I attended the Beyond the Service - Social change as good business. I learned that food insecurity is something that many face and that 40% of fresh food is wasted. This really made me want to be better and not waste food.
- Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why?
The presentation that I found most impactful was about DC Central Kitchen. The student talked about their experience with volunteering there for FYDP and how she had volunteered after FYDP at the same place because she had such a good experience. She noted that the most impactful part of her service was just talking with the community members while they were eating the meals that were prepared, and this was because she got to know the people throughout the time she spent volunteering. I found that nice because I also had a good volunteering experience where I was able to talk with community members and that was what I enjoyed most about serving.

- Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new your learned about community engaged scholarship?
I went to the same one as everyone else, where LastCall and Community Engaged Consulting presented about how the two organizations came to life from being ideas that students had during their early years at GWSB. I learned that community-engaged scholarship can be whatever you believe will help the community. Both of the organizations went about engaging with the community differently, and I liked seeing how there were multiple ways of getting in touch with the community and that there isn't only one way to give back.
Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why?
I saw various presentations and they were all short and taught me a lot about serving the community and several ways and resources that are available for community engagement, the most impactful presentation, according to me, was the one on "Interaction Between Intellectual Disability and Cerebral Palsy on the Co-Occurence of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Epilepsy" the focus of this was to to raise awareness of education about ASD and epilepsy to immediate care givers of children with cerebral palsy.
I learned a lot about epilepsy and the care and help that can be given to children with cerebral palsy and how we can engage with the community to engage and help from our part.

Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new your learned about community engaged scholarship?
I attended the session of "Social Change as Good Business" and in this session I learned that both speakers, Sejal Mehta and Dylan Talli have great visions on solving problems, having a positive outlook on life and the vision of always serving the community as a good and more importantly, essential form of business. Another key takeaway is that we should not worry too much about planning future but just capitalising current opportunities of getting involved, learning more from diverse cultures and also engage with the community to give back to them in some way that would be helpful.
Question 1: I found that the presentation on food insecurities in ward 4 was very impactful because we talk about how people have difficulties accessing food and it is even more difficult for senior citizens who cannot drive. I think it is important because there are not very many options for people to eat healthy which is bad.

Question 2: I attended the Community Engagement Consulting session where we learned about Last Call and CEC. Something I learned was that a small idea can become an actual business even as a student that can happen which is really cool. It was also cool to see the resources both of them used through GW to make their ideas become what they are today
Question 1: The most impactful showcase presentation for me was the one about DC Central Kitchen. They talked about helping to reduce food insecurity. I learned that they prepared over 3.2 million nutritious meals for homeless shelters. This was very impactful as it shows how people living in the same area as me were leading very different lives.
Question 2: The session I attended was called Social Change as Good Business. The session focused on reducing food waste. I learned that almost 40% of the food produced in the US is wasted. This was very surprising as it showed that a lot more food was wasted than I thought. Both of the speakers at the panels were entrepreneurs and I learned from them that it is always good to go forward with whatever idea you believe in.
The showcase that was most impactful to me was the presentation about the national wildlife fund. I learned about how to better market the apparel that is currently outdated and I feel very passionate about conservation and fundraising for organizations that address sustainability and conversation of the environment. It was super interesting to learn more about combining business and my love for the earth.

I attended the Community Engagement Consulting session with SEC and Last Call. I learned that there are organizations I can join on campus that address issues like food insecurity and work towards bettering the DC community through service. I had a great experience!

Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why?
the most impactful showcase is the one on "Interaction Between Intellectual Disability and Cerebral Palsy on the Co-Occurence of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Epilepsy" the focus of the showcase is to to raise awareness of the co-occurence and education about ASD and epilepsy must be provided to the immediate care givers of children with cerebral palsy. because additional information about the trigger factors of epilepsy with initial management steps are helpful.

Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new your learned about community engaged scholarship?
we only get to attend one session which was the "Social change as Good Business". I learned a lot from both speakers as they both share a similar story. neither one of them know from the beginning that they wanted to work for a greater social impact. but they both ended up enjoying what they are doing right now. the biggest take away for me is that it's okay to not know what to do as for now. because they also figure their things out along the way.
