[Katherine Min]

The most impactful presentation was the lack of affordable housing in Ward 5. Due to gentrification, African American communities in DC are losing their homes. When I see cute buildings in DC, I never thought about how it can affect the people who cannot afford to house in DC. The presentation was interactive with questions and it made me think more about the problems of urban housing.
I attended the session that talked about food waste. In school, I learned about African countries and other developing countries suffer because they do not have enough food to eat, but I never thought about food insecurity in the United States. It was shocking seeing lots of people suffering from food insecurities and I learned that business leaders can come up with the possible and creative solution to solve the problems in society.
Symposium Questions for Class Credit
Question #1 Which showcase presentation was most impactful to you and why? (Be sure to upload a picture)
Question #2 Which of the six sessions did you attend from 2:30-3:30? In your session, what was something new your learned about community engaged scholarship?
Question 1: The showcase presentation that was most impactful to me was the one by the students from SMPA Capstone. They had to make 7-8 minute long documentaries that were about a specific issue. One was about a transgender women of color sex worker and the troubles she faced. She talked about how she was stabbed and beat and raped and the court proceeding for these were unjust because she is transgender. She makes very little money and has such a stressful life. I think this was very important because the way people view sex workers is so different than the reality. Sex work is hard, and they are exposed to so much violence. 2. I went to the session in the continental ballroom. One of the presenters showcased their business that shows to reduce food waste and the other one was about community service. What I learned was that it is very beneficial to use your skills and develop them at a nonprofit. This benefits the nonprofit and the world and also improves your career. — Katherine Stassis Katherine Stassis on April 26, 2019
