30 minutes daily check ins with zowy over the course of 4 days
COACHES CONNECT- I engaged in reflection and games with other Lesson Check-In coaches. I also recorded an interview video for the program.
We can apply Dr. MLK Jr philosophy can be applied to dismantling oppressive institutions.
The history lesson and the various poems were inspirational.
I received this message from my mentee this morning "heyy.. i realized i forgot about [redacted] i’m so sorry ms. faith. a lot has been going on in my [redacted]. i’m stressed like crazy and i work every day. i couldn’t login to google classroom for a week so my school assignments are just piling up and i’m trying my best to manage them. but i’m doing good and ready to talk whenever you are".
I instantly called my student and assured her that no matter what age or in what part of life someone is, they can lose track of their work or become stressed. I reminded her that school is a priority and some things are beyond our control. We then came up with a game plan to makeup her missing assignments. I then called various offices in her school (they were very unresponsive like she expressed). I finally received some email addresses for teachers and made them aware of her challenges. I also checked in with her every two hours to make sure she was making progress. I gave her some resources to find definitions that are broken down further and has examples. I spent the entire day calling, and emailing, and waiting, and replying.
I spoke to Ari about the plan I created for Zowy. I shared materials such as our week by week breakdown and shared my experiences with other mentorship programs.
I spent three hours curating and confirming research about FAFSA and making a canvas for the Instagram page. This is in review, and I'm waiting for feedback to edit and make changes.
Today I spent time (1 hour) talking to Zowy about her week, her school and work experience, and her post-secondary goals. I also used this time to build some more rapport. During this time I gained a greater understanding of the aspects of cosmetology she is most interested in. We scheduled another meeting session.
Following the meeting I spent time (2 hours) doing the following:
- Creating a google drive folder for Zowy, her mom, and I
- Creating an outline for week to week focuses for our meetings with links and resources
- Created a Cosmetology School Comparison Worksheet
- Researching Cosmetogoly school requirements
I attended a great talk about grad schools for my mentee. I think going to the workshop and being able to relay information to him is helpful. It's also good for us to learn about the same things at the same time to build a rapport. After the meeting, we explored some of his post-graduate interests in sports management.
At first, I struggled to get in contact with my mentee's parent, but after reaching out to Lesson Check In, I was able to speak to my mentee and their parent. I think I built a good rapport with the both of them and look forward to speaking with them in the future.
Amazing content creator meeting. I enjoyed the time we had to brainstorm, as well as the opportunity to learn about new platforms.
I really enjoyed this impact. I spent about an hour planning for my first meeting with Arielle. In this time I did further research on the organizations mission, and wrote down the purpose, outcomes, and process of working with Lesson Check In. I then had a 33 minute call with Arielle where we build a rapport and discussed Lesson Check-In more. Following the call, sent out a few emails connecting Lesson Check-In with the Nashman Center and GWTeach.
This was an amazing onboarding via Zoom. Extremely organized and a good opportunity to meet the team.
I enjoyed hosting this workshop for students. It was exciting sharing information about Service on campus to students. It was challenging to engage student in conversation because the event was virtual- nevertheless they seemed to learn and find out about resources.
