HSSJ 2170 Interpersonal Relationships

Today I prepared for my meeting with Mr. Tony Lewis Jr. we will be discussing public art and how we can mitigate potential risks for the community of Anacostia. I will be asking questions like, What positive images come to mind when you think of DC? What negative images come up? Do you believe in the impact of public art? Have you seen public art be successful (go-go revolution). What images would you want to see in Anacostia?

Today I worked remotely on the grant writing project, researching grants and working on the budget. I am focusing on grants that are opening to funding creative projects. I am also looking at pervious successful grants written by ONE DC and similar organizations.

Today I worked on the next newsletter that we will be sending out regarding the public arts project. I compiled my work from the lit review I did for my non-profit management class, and now Claire and I will proceed to draft the newsletter. The purpose of the letter is to inform the community of our intentions with the project. By doing this we will properly inform the public, and be able to receive feedback by the affected members. I also started working on the grant writing process, including finding a specific grant to focus on.

I organized and painted a mural for the ONEDC office. I was also able to talk about my research on public art and the utilization of public art as a catalyst for change. This is relevant especially because I am writing a grant to help fund a large public art project for One DC

Today we planned a mural project to help convey the messages that ONE DC is trying to convey. We are creating a mural of Fannie Lou Hammer along side a famous quote of hers. I will be supplying some supplies and doing the organizing of the graphics for the mural. I also did research on a man described as a “slum lord”, who irresponsibly mishandles dc properties mainly focused on low income areas.

Today I went to the Black Wellness Center in SE, and I had a great learning experience about some of the administrative stuff that is necessary to run a non profit. I was expecting to be meetin two high schoolers, but I will be meeting them on Tuesday at the admin meeting that I will be attending. I learned about the nation builder system that a lot of non profits use. I began to format and organize emails that need to be sent out.
