Every time I serve at SOME it is more fun. I have started to form a relationship with the staff and the regulars in the dining room, it is fun to hear about the new things in their life and to hear about the new things in their life and accomplishments they have achieved since I was last there. It is always a rewarding experience to serve at SOME and the organization is doing incredible work.
It was another great time serving breakfast, the guests were friendly and some made an effort to get to know the volunteers and put a smile on our faces. It was fulfilling to help these people as they focus on getting back on their feet and hearing that one of the guests was starting a new job that week was an incredible thing. We not only got to connect with the guests and staff but also volunteers from other universities and the greater DC community which made the whole thing feel more connected to the city.
It was an incredible opportunity to connect with the greater community and provide a meal that so many people take for granted. The community at SOME is so welcoming and the staff not only cares deeply about the people they help but also the volunteers who come to help, they make a point of getting to know everyone and make sure we are always smiling. It was a great way to start the day and a great way to give back to the community.
It felt good to spend time cleaning the marina and know that a cleaner marina will benefit the people and animals around us as well as ourselves.
Marina Clean up. Contributing to the overall health and cleanliness of the Washington Sailing Marina and the Potomac River. It is very important that we keep our world as a whole as free from pollution as possible and doing so starts with our local communities so I am glad I could take advantage of this opportunity to help pickup as much trash as possible.
Today we did a cleanup at our home venue. We sail at the Washington Sailing Marina which is also open to the public. Unfortunately, our home venue is often treated poorly by the public and it feels great to give back and do what we can to make our venue better.
worked with the GWU sailing team to clean up the marina and public parks nearby where we and many others sail and do other recreational activities.
Today I got to clean up the Washington Sailing Marina that I sail out of. It was great to pick up trash and make an impact on the environment surrounding the marina.
We cleaned up the marina where we sail everyday by picking up trash around the boats and on the shoreline. It was nice to clean up the marina we sail at and help to clean the Potomac river.
I helped prep meals for Martha's table by working alongside the kitchen staff. It was great to see people come together to help feed the less fortunate.
I helped support and assist in a GW Engineering Final Project. These upperclassmen built drift tricycles over the course of the year and it was extremely interesting to watch and experience. While most of the times I was cheering from the sideline and providing moral support, I helped move a few groups vehicles among other small tasks such as assisting in the inflation of tires and reattaching basic parts after minor breakdowns. The competition came to an abrupt end after one competitor lost steerage and continued to accelerate directly into a shear wall. The impact ruptured a pipe which caused a full evacuation of the underground parking garage and surrounding buildings. After we were issued an all clear, I helped carry the vehicles out of the garage.
I attended a computer science lecture hosted by GW ACM about regulating the internet. The guest speaker was KC Claffy, a leading researcher in the field. I learned a lot about the intricacies and difficulties that policymakers have to consider when deciding how to regulate how the internet is used. I really enjoyed this community engagement experience because I was exposed to an interesting topic with many of my fellow classmates and professors.
It felt good to be doing my part in maintaining a clean environment where many people and myself visit often. Picking up trash is a very effective way of making a place look a lot better. It is satisfying to see all the trash you collected once you finish knowing that the park is that much cleaner than when you got there.
It was very nice to see all the different people showcasing their community service.
Visited different rooms with community engagement topics and learned about the service they did and how we can get involved.
