Today was the last day of 826DC's summer camp. Campers learned about climate activism, made their own protest signs, and went on a short climate action protest walk with their signs. Afterwards campers had an end of camp celebration.

Technology delays again caused a lot of idle time as we stayed at 826DC's office today. However, campers loved the "garbage truck petting zoo" and the dog fashion show. Campers also wrote several times today: on sustainable fashion and an imaginative story on the daily experience of a rain drop.

It was a busy day at 826DC. We started off visiting Fia's Fabulous Finds, a thrift store in Petworth, to explore sustainable fashion. After returning to the office, campers were able to tie-dye T-shirts with sustainably-made dyes.

826DC's summer writing camp visited Common Good City Farm, located in Shaw. The campers were able to learn about opportunities for urban farming and community-engaged agriculture. The campers seemed to enjoy getting to pick mint to make their own infused water.

This was 826DC's second off-site writing workshop at Hubbard Place apartment complex. After seeing how the writers were largely disengaged the first visit and now knowing the wide age range of the writers, I had hoped that a different approach would be taken to engage the writers with the session. This was not the case, and the students were even less engaged, and technological unpreparedness led to long idle times.

On Monday 826DC's summer camp traveled to the Earth Conservation Corps, a local organization focused on protecting DC's native plant and animal species. Because the weather was hot, students were disengaged with the outdoor portion of the field trip; however, they enjoyed getting to see a Red-Tailed Hawk and a Eurasian Eagle Owl.

826DC's summer camp took a full morning trip to the National Botanical Gardens today. I was slightly nervous about taking campers on the metro; however, we all made it there and back with no issues! The campers seemed to enjoy exploring the botanical gardens.

Friday was the most successful day for 826DC's summer camp so far! Lindsey prepared an excellent lesson on pollinators and pollination. The campers loved creating their own fantastical pollinator-plant symbiotic relationships and engaged in the writing prompt for the lesson (write a story with your pollinator as the main character). Seven campers were excited to share their stories (up to 1.5 pages), including an illustrated comic strip.
The campers then ended their first week with "choice time," while The Bee Movie played in the background.
