Every member of the athletics community is responsible for knowing the risks associated with substance use and abuse. Medically and socially, the risks can seriously interfere with an individual’s performance both as a student and as an athlete, and can endanger the well being of their teammates. Therefore, student-athletes, coaches, and staff are responsible for knowing and understanding the relevant university policies, federal, state, and local laws and are obligated to conduct themselves in accordance with these policies and laws.

When a student becomes a member of an athletic team at The George Washington University and, thus, becomes a GW student-athlete, he/she accepts the responsibility to maintain certain behaviors in the areas of academic, athletic, and general conduct. Student-athlete participation in any aspect of The George Washington University intercollegiate athletics program or its support services is considered a privilege rather than a right. This handbook outlines the rules for and responsibilities of all student-athletes at GW, please govern yourselves accordingly.
