About

Organization Overview:

Founded in 2000 by Dr. Lynn Bergfalk, CITY GATE is an urban ministry in Washington, DC that seeks to open doors of opportunity and empowerment for the city’s residents. Its mission is to empower those on the margins of urban society to access more fully the life and benefits of the larger community, and to implement strategies of partnership that address the needs of children, youth, and others who are disadvantaged or disenfranchised.

The work of CITY GATE extends throughout Washington, D.C. with program sites currently operating in Wards 1, 3, 7, and 8, and Prince George’s County. Its mission statement embraces the following goals:

Embody a practical vision of community based upon justice, compassion and spirituality that values every individual and promotes the growth of love and justice in personal and social relationships.

Help those on the margins of urban society to access and participate more fully in the life and benefits of the larger community.

Implement strategies of partnership, and specific programs that address the needs of urban youth, the homeless, the poor, the immigrant and others who are disadvantaged or disenfranchised.

Provide bridges of friendship and service for individuals and volunteer groups to understand and participate in the struggles and challenges of the disadvantaged or disenfranchised in our cities.

Enlist support from those among the general public who wish to strengthen our communities through programs of service and education, and through development of innovative strategies and structures for social change

Mission: CITY GATE goes beyond addressing physical needs or providing educational opportunities. CITY GATE’s overarching goal is building - from the bottom up - communities of caring, compassion, and capability that strengthen society and empower the individual.
