About

As a volunteer translator assistant, you will accompany patients to appointments with doctors and other health care professionals who volunteer to provide care.  You will provide simultaneous interpretation/translation for the patient and the doctor.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Accompany a patient, who has expressed a need for language assistance, to appointments 
  • Receive appointment assignments from CCHCN 
  • Contact, by telephone, the patient to confirm the date, time, and location of the appointment and to confirm plan to meet just prior to the appointment  
  • Assist the patient to interact with the administrative and medical personnel, as needed, by translating for each side of the conversation 
  • Follow-up by telephone with the patient to ensure that any instructions or further appointments are completed 

Qualifications

  • Fluency in English and Spanish medical terminology as demonstrated in a conversation with CCHCN staff 
  • Complete a short course on the HIPAA requirements that CCHCN is required to follow 
  • Travel to appointments which are generally held at volunteer providers offices in Medstar Georgetown, Sibley Hospital, Suburban Hospital, or outpatient surgery centers located in DC, Maryland, or Virginia and which are accessible via public transportation.  

Time Commitment

  • Translate for at least 2 patient appointments per month 
  • Appointments are generally weekdays between 9-5
  • 12-month commitment
